How to always have milk in the fridge

\"HowKids are in bed. You\’re in your comfy clothes. You open the fridge and you\’re out of milk. Time to get dressed and walk, bike or drive to get some milk, or else set the alarm 15 minutes earlier in the morning.
Wouldn\’t it be nice to avoid the above scenario and just always have milk in the fridge? With a little help from technology, it\’s possible. Especially if you have an iPhone or iPad3G with location-based reminders. Similar services are also available on Android.
In this article I will show you how my \”Got Milk?\” reminder is setup to alert me en route home any time I drive by my local store for milk. This has saved me from late night frustrations as described above ever since I set it up. It only takes a minute or so, and here are the steps:

  1. Make sure your iPhone or iPad3G is running iOS version 5 or later. To do this, connect to iTunes and update the iOS software, if necessary.
  2. Next, you will need to be either at a point close to where you drive by your local milk source, or know the address. Launch the app called Reminders, and select the PLUS (+) sign at the top right, and label it as you like, but enable the location feature so it looks like this:

That\’s pretty much it! Each time you arrive at this address, you will be reminded with a notice. I am making the assumption, of course, that you are using your iOS device in a safe, handsfree manner, yet in a way you can be alerted. In my case, it is my GPS any time I drive, so it\’s on my dash and the alert is both audible and visual as you can see here:
If you really dig location-based reminders, Checkmark is an app that makes the setup much easier. You setup your location such as home, work, grocery store and then start with a location and quickly add a reminder.
There are other useful ways to use location-based reminders such as:

  • Remind me to disconnect from my technology (at least for a while) when I get home.
  • Remind me to call Joe when I get to work.
  • Remind me to tell my wife I miss her already when I leave home.

On an iPhone 4S you can use Siri to setup the above reminders.
Do you have any other tips on location-based reminders?
